Group Cobra: Installation of a Turbidity Control System
In collaboration with Group Cobra — a global infrastructure and construction giant established in 1944 — VORTEX Water Engineering provided full engineering services for the company’s project at the United Water Supply Company of Georgia’s water treatment plant in Martvili, Georgia. Our team designed, installed, and commissioned a comprehensive water analytics and turbidity control system to address long-standing operational challenges.
Our technical assignment was multi-faceted and included several critical tasks:
-
Developing a method to measure turbidity in incoming water
Since the station’s launch, accurately measuring turbidity had not been possible. To solve this, we engineered a solution to modify the physical properties of incoming water, making it possible to precisely determine turbidity levels. -
Programming PLC controllers for automatic water diversion
We configured the PLC to automatically direct water based on turbidity levels:-
< 5 NTU: Water is redirected toward the Poti Water Supply Station
-
> 5 NTU: Water is discharged safely back into the river
This fully automated process ensures optimal resource management and water safety.
-
-
Automating filtration systems
The existing water filters at the station were reprogrammed with new operational parameters, enabling automatic control and enhanced performance of the filtration process.
Today, the Martvili Water Station operates in a fully automated mode: the system measures turbidity in real time and automatically diverts water either to the Poti station or into the river, ensuring efficient water quality management and improved operational reliability.
